acrylic painting on newspaper

  • At the center of the composition of the painting, the Liverpool and Chelsea players face off on the football field of Anfield Stadium in Liverpool for the return semifinal of the Champions League 2006-2007. The action is framed by a red scenic backdrop reminiscent of a theater, a visual representation of the common expression in football jargon “spectacle football.”
The moment captured in the painting is that of the decisive goal scored by Reds defender Daniel Agger in the 22nd minute of the first half: an achievement that will allow the team to reach the penalties and thus qualify for the final.
The moment of the goal is reproduced by Pharaildis exactly as it happened: the action starts from a free kick taken from the left by midfielder Steven Gerrard, who passes the ball to Agger; the defender, with a left-footed shot, manages to send the ball into the net in the corner to the right of the opposing goalkeeper.
The work is one of the most representative of the artist's exploration of the theme of football, created with acrylic painting on newspaper. The painting technique that combines the materiality of brushstrokes with the lightness of the support makes the work appear as a sort of tapestry inscribing a contemporary cosmogony.
