On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the publication of the collection of stories "Danube" by Triestine writer Claudio Magris, the Gino Scagnetti Archive is pleased to present the most important work from the series dedicated to the Danube by Friulian abstract artist Gino Scagnetti.
Claudio Magris is a significant literary reference for Gino Scagnetti. They both share a strong interest in Central European culture, which leads to a common attraction to the subject of the Danube, understood not merely as a river but as an allegorical place of contemporary human life. Magris states: “The Danube is a contradictory metaphor for the multi-layering of contemporary identity—of every identity.” Gino Scagnetti captures the profound essence of Magris's text and reveals it through his art. His works in this series never present real landscapes but always inner landscapes. The river becomes a metaphor for the (impossible) endeavor of the artist to give a definitive form to an image of his own self.
“Danube is a poem about distance, about coming and going from afar, about not knowing where one comes from and where one is going. It shows how many suggestions can arise between literature and life.”
