VINCENZO AGNETTI – GIANNI MALABARBA

Mario Schifano - Gianni Malabarba. Pittura e Poesia

VINCENZO AGNETTI - GIANNI MALABARBA

The BKV Fine Art gallery presents the exhibition ‘Mario Schifano - Gianni Malabarba. Painting and Poetry’ (28 February - 17 April 2025) realised in collaboration with the Vincenzo Agnetti Archive. The relationship between artist Vincenzo Agnetti and collector Gianni Malabarba is the subject of a special focus of the exhibition's contents. In fact, Malabarba, collector and poet, a regular visitor to the Italian art scene since the late 1950s, friend and supporter of several artists, and promoter of exhibitions and art reviews in the 1960s and 1970s, is linked to Agnetti by a fraternal friendship that goes beyond the mere bond of collecting.

The fruitful relationship is testified here by an unpublished letter from Malabarba to Agnetti, which highlights how the friendly acquaintance between artist and collector is profound and made up of mutual esteem to the point that Malabarba himself conditioned Agnetti's artistic choices.

The care taken by both, dedicated to the search for the right ‘word’, for Malabarba in his written expression, for Agnetti in his artistic dimension, is well summarised in the felt exhibited in the gallery ‘In the end he chose the most difficult thing the choice’, a work that once belonged to the Malabarba collection.

Also from the Agnetti Archive is the artist's original typescript explaining the significance of the work Off Limits, 1969, a tear on canvas and plaster still owned by Malabarba, and a version of Libro dimenticato a memoria, from the same year, in which the centrality of the importance for Agnetti of the written word and its connection to contemporary culture is further explored.

Mario Schifano - Gianni Malabarba. Painting and Poetry

The exhibition, the precious result of a long work between BKV Fine Art, the Mario Schifano Archive and Giovanni Calamari, Gianni Malabarba's grandson, recounts the unique bond between the artist and perhaps his most passionate collector.

The friendship, collaboration and profound relationship that united Mario Schifano to the collector and poet Gianni Malabarba, to whose family the works on display have always belonged, is recounted through 73 unpublished works.

More than sixty works on paper divided by thematic groups, such as Futurism revisited and Landscapes, retrace the entire artistic production that Schifano developed simultaneously with other media and supports, constituting a motif that accompanied him throughout his life.

Also present are three emulsion canvases from the 1970s inspired by the poems of Gianni Malabarba, which are particularly significant and highlight the close relationship between these two personalities from the cultured environment of post-World War II Milan. In those years sculptors, painters, writers and poets confronted each other, generating a contamination that saw all the ‘Arts’ as part of a single intellectual process.

Also on display are numerous poems, original typescripts, by Gianni Malabarba.

Realised in collaboration with the Archivio Mario Schifano.
