Un omaggio alla neve attraverso l’arte di Federica Galli, acquafortista pura, in grado come pochi di rendere la consistenza impalpabile della neve nelle sue incisioni.

La neve è un evento climatico da cui tutti gli artisti incisori si sono sempre tenuti a distanza; nemmeno i più virtuosi bulinisti, silografi e acquafortisti nordici del passato hanno realizzato opere che la raffigurassero. Evidentemente la difficoltà di dar corpo alla consistenza soffice della neve ha fatto sì che nell’iconografia grafica Occidentale sia un elemento pressoché inesistente. 

Con Federica Galli i parametri si invertono e a partire dal 1985 (l’anno della celebre nevicata che sommerse il Nord Italia) le vedute bianche e innevate della campagna lombarda - e non solo - assumeranno un ruolo consistente nel suo corpus grafico. Per ottenere l'effetto l’artista lascia che sia la carta bianca, fra i segni di contorno, a dare l'impressione della neve e per farlo deve prevedere, durante la fase di incisione, dove lasciare il vuoto. Sarà infatti l’assenza di segni a dare la suggestione dei cumuli di neve. Un processo estremamente complesso perché l’incisore lavora con immagini ribaltate e in negativo rispetto ai risultati che si apprezzano sulla carta una volta stampata.

A tribute to snow through the art of Federica Galli, a pure etcher, capable like few others of rendering the intangible texture of snow in her engravings.

Snow is a climatic event that all engraving artists have always kept their distance from; not even the most virtuous Nordic engravers, woodcut artists and etchers of the past have created works depicting it. Evidently, the difficulty of giving substance to the soft texture of snow has meant that it is an almost non-existent element in Western graphic iconography. 

With Federica Galli, the paradigm is reversed and, starting in 1985 (the year of the famous snowfall that submerged northern Italy), the white, snow-covered views of the Lombardy countryside - and beyond - took on a significant role in her graphic corpus. To achieve this effect, the artist allows the white paper, between the outline marks, to give the impression of snow. To do this, she must anticipate, during the engraving phase, where to leave the space blank. It is the absence of marks that gives the impression of snowdrifts. This is an extremely complex process because the engraver works with images that are reversed and in negative compared to the results that can be seen on the paper once printed.
